INSTAGRAM HITS MILESTONE OF 400 MILLION USERS


Instagram, the photo sharing social media site which was bought by facebook in 2013 for one billion dollars has hit a milestone of 400 million users. The San Fransisco based company which is a unicorn ( term in the investment industry,  which denotes a start-up company whose valuation has exceeded (the somewhat arbitrary) $1 billion dollars) said it was thrilled by the milestone in its blog post.
 The social network has surged ahead of Twitter, which at the end of 2014 had 282 million users, but trails Facebook and the WhatsApp messaging service, which have around 1.49 billion and 600 million active monthly users respectively.

"When Instagram launched nearly five years ago, 400 million seemed like a distant dream. Now, we continue to strive to improve Instagram - helping you experience the world through images and connect with others through shared passions." the company said.

The company launched a new app, Layout from Instagram, in March to enable users to select up to three photos at once and combine them into a single image in a range of layouts.
Instagram was created by Mr Systrom and Mike Krieger, and launched in October 2010.
It rapidly gained popularity and by April 2012 it had reached more than 100 million active users.

In April 2012, Instagram was sold to Facebook for $1 billion in cash and stock, along with 13 employees. The deal netted founder  Systrom $400 million based on his ownership stake in the business. Instagram is now worth $35 billion.
